What was the first minivan?
Some people think that the Dodge Caravan & Plymouth Voyager were the first. Not exactly. They were introduced in November 1983 as 1984 models, after some other minivans. Those include the Stout Scarab from 1936. Or the Volkswagen Type 2 from way back in 1950. The first ideas, sketches, and designs date back to 1947 by Ben Pon. Or the Lloyd LT 500/600 from the 1950s and 1960s. It is considered as a vintage minivan. Also, the Renault Espace & Toyota Van from the 1980s are on the list.
When Chrysler launched the Caravan and Voyager back in late 1983, several car manufacturers got to work fast and immediately responded. Chevy and GMC responded with the Astro and Safari in 1985, Ford answered with the Aerostar minivan in mid-1985, Mazda made the rear-wheel drive MPV in 1989 as a response, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile replied with the Lumina APV, Trans Sport, and Silhouette in 1990 as the other versions of GM minivans, Toyota answered back in 1991 with the mid-engined Previa, Nissan and Mercury launched the Quest and Villager in 1993, Honda got the Odyssey in 1995, etc.
